About the artist and his philosophy on photography:
I have been taking flower and landscape photographs for over 40 years. I have worked some in black and white, but much prefer full color work so the vast majority of my work is color. Close-up flower photography is fascinating to me because it captures a moment in time when the flower was at its peak and the light was just right – it allows us to preserve that view of a very fragile and fleeting item for decades to come. The details that the photograph reveals can be seen in a way that are difficult, if not impossible, to see while viewing the flower in “real life”.
Landscape photography has always been important to me as well. I enjoy capturing views of mountains and seashores, sunrises and sunsets, and when the situation permits, adding in a group of wild flowers as a highlight.
While I (and everyone else my age, for that matter) started with film, I now work only in digital media. I use an 8.0 megapixel Sony DSC F-828 camera with a Zeiss zoom lens (28 to 200 mm equivalent). Even though I use digital, I rarely correct the lighting or contrast and almost never crop the image. I try to capture the image I am looking for with the camera and print what I see through the viewfinder.
